I had the privilege of being the Conference and Seminar Emcee of the Singapore International Bunkering Conference (SIBCON) 2012; the World's Largest Bunkering Event organized by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore, the Government agency in charge of all things maritime. A biennial event, SIBCON sees 1600 participants from over 50 countries all around the world. SIBCON 2012 ran from 16th to 19th October: it consisted of a Golfing Challenge, Conferences (with leading topics in the Bunkering Industry) and closing with a Joint Oil Spill Exercise (JOSE) that's unique to SIBCON - participants got the opportunity to learn how to tackle an oil spill in the Port of Singapore.
SIBCON 2012 saw some very important people; we had Mr Lui Tuck Yew (Minister for Transport), and super star speakers Aaron Cobb (Global Director, ExxonMobil Marine Fuels), Thomas Knudsen (CEO, Maersk Line, Asia Pacific), Arsenio A. Dominguez (Vice Chairman Marine Environment Protection Committee, IMO), Jeff Lantz (Director, Commercial Regulations and Standards, US Coast Guard), amongst many others. It was an honour being in the company and having the opportunity to meet these influential individuals.
It was an extremely interesting event for me to be the Seminar Emcee for, not to mention a challenging one! I had no knowledge about the Bunkering Industry and had to do a ton of homework before I took on the job, but I can honestly say that while the research I did made a difference, I learnt so much more on my first day alone. By the end of it, I felt like quite the expert (especially with industry jargon) ;) Okay that was an exaggeration. Haha.
I must add- SIBCON 2012 wouldn't have gone so well if it wasn't for the fantastic work by IBC Asia - the event took up the entire convention centre at Resorts World Sentosa and he managed to run it without a hitch. Extremely impressive!
Big thanks to IBC Asia for having me at SIBCON 2012! I look forward to working with you again and putting newly acquired knowledge to good use! :)
